Canon To Offer 650Mbyte 3.5-inch
MOD Drive By 1996 11/11/94 TOKYO,
JAPAN, 1994 NOV 11 (NB) -- Canon
plans to commercialize a 650Mbyte
3.5-inch magneto-optic disk (MOD)
drive by 1996. The company has
already organized a development team
staffed by about 80 people (who
include employees of its group firms
such as Canon Electronics) with
expertise in 5.25-inch MOD drive
development.
Canon intends to boost MOD
development expenses for fiscal 1994
by 40% over fiscal 1993.
The new MOD drive to be developed
by Canon will meet the next-
generation MOD drive standard that 24
firms from the US, Europe, and Japan,
including IBM and Fujitsu, agreed to
establish as an ISO (International
Organization for Standardization)
standard. Also competing to establish
an industry standard include Sony,
Hitachi, and 3M, companies which
recently reached an agreement to
develop their own MOD standard by
next year, and Matsushita Electric
and Toshiba which plans to develop a
phase-shift MOD drive in 1995.
