  5.     Canon To Offer 650Mbyte 3.5-inch
  6. MOD Drive By 1996 11/11/94 TOKYO,
  7. JAPAN, 1994 NOV 11 (NB) -- Canon
  8. plans to commercialize a 650Mbyte
  9. 3.5-inch magneto-optic disk (MOD)
  10. drive by 1996. The company has
  11. already organized a development team
  12. staffed by about 80 people (who
  13. include employees of its group firms
  14. such as Canon Electronics) with
  15. expertise in 5.25-inch MOD drive
  16. development.

  18.     Canon intends to boost MOD
  19. development expenses for fiscal 1994
  20. by 40% over fiscal 1993.

  22.     The new MOD drive to be developed
  23. by Canon will meet the next-
  24. generation MOD drive standard that 24
  25. firms from the US, Europe, and Japan,
  26. including IBM and Fujitsu, agreed to
  27. establish as an ISO (International
  28. Organization for Standardization)
  29. standard. Also competing to establish
  30. an industry standard include Sony,
  31. Hitachi, and 3M, companies which
  32. recently reached an agreement to
  33. develop their own MOD standard by
  34. next year, and Matsushita Electric
  35. and Toshiba which plans to develop a
  36. phase-shift MOD drive in 1995.
